Death is the cousin of sleep or something like that. my relatives aren't your relatives but relatively speaking it would be nice to see you again. touch your face. smell your clothes that look like mine. fabric too thick to burn and a bridge too short to bungee jump-cut my documentary and omit the part where I tell you "I love you" - emotional currency devalued by the abundance of allure and appeal of those we don't know. burnt matches. everything is tender. coal ash in the river i need for energy & fire can't fight fire without gas

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Naomi Wong and I'm a fashion and portrait photographer and I also work in film.

Why do you do what you do?

I've been taking photos since I was around 17 and I just love it. It's the ability to be able to capture moments in time and also to create constructed images. I like to shoot strictly on 35mm film, I think there's something really special about it especially when you see your pictures for the first time. I always enjoyed making things growing up and doing what I do makes me happy.

My name is Naomi Wong and I’m a fashion and portrait photographer and I also work in film.

I always enjoyed making things growing up and doing what I do makes me happy.

What are you working on currently?

I’m currently working on a secret project with Liam which will all be revealed very soon. I’m also planning a project which is very close to me on East Asian creatives in London. As well as that, I’m in the process of thinking of some ideas for my next short.

What’s the best thing about living in London and how does it affect your work?

The clash of cultures and different people around, I feel like you can always learn something new. There’s an energy here that’s very different to Northern England where I grew up. There’s always things to see and do in London, I don’t think I could ever get bored here. I think it’s affected my work in terms of the people I meet and have collaborated with, I’ve been lucky to meet very like minded and interesting people.

What themes do you often touch on in your work?

Nostalgia and British Culture. I think there’s a lot of coming-of-age undertones in my work, those moments where you used to hang outside corner shops trying to ask people to buy you and your mates cigarettes when you were 15.

What song do you currently have on repeat?

There’s an American band called TV Girl which I discovered recently and really like. I can’t lie I’m also into Rich Chigga at the moment.

How would you describe your style?

Lots of wide trousers, something black and gold Jade rings my mum gave me.

How do you feel about the nature of the creative industries today?

I think it’s a lot more accessible now because of social media and the internet but I think that it’s still very difficult for people from working class backgrounds. I grew up in a rural town in Northern England and a lot of people I know were put off by the idea of it being quite elitist and impossible if you don’t have money. You meet a lot of rich kids at art school and in the industry but not many from working class backgrounds. It’s also still quite predominately white and the space needs to be opened up to more PoC creatives.
